The title might sound weird but it's a reference to my Dec. 31st. :) post. Click the link to get to the post.
So after upgrading my boxes to FreeBSD and being generally happy with it, I had decided to try other BSDs just to get the hang of them as well. Ok, so I bought a copy of OpenBSD 4.1 when it was released. I had to reformat my disks anyways so I figured why not do it now. And so, I ended up with an OpenBSD install done in less than 15 minutes. From start to end. And I was rebooted into a bash prompt and ready to pkg_add my first few packages. Ok, I had to configure an environment variable and it took 5 minutes to find the exact value that I needed but all in all, in 20 minutes (maximum) I was up and running and I had all of the packages I needed installed. Including apache/php/mysql. All I needed to do now was configure the servers I wanted to run on boot and I was set. Took another 30 minutes +/- and presto. My server was back up and running like a charm. Only thing left to configure was my volume (what people know as IDE Software RAID). It has a specific name on OpenBSD and the documentation was a bit complicated to understand at first but once you got the hang of it, by modifying the examples just a little bit, you were good to go. Anyways, I stayed true to OpenBSD for two years. The only reason I migrated away from it was the fact that I couldn't upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2 without a complete re-installation.
So being stuck to re-install anyways, I figured, I'd get back to good old Debian Testing. I still run an Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop though. So yeah, that's my Linux news for now.

Breakfast time.
I had breakfast with my little sister this morning, again. I really enjoy our mornings together, although everytime I have to leave, I find myself wishing I could spend the rest of the day with her. I just had to share that.

Blogging.
I haven't blogged in a long long time. Not sure I really want to get back into it at the moment because I already don't have enough time to do all I want to do but I figured, what the heck, I don't have much to say but I just wanted to post something to show that I'm still alive.

Seems that I'm posting here a bit more now. I didn't know where to post this. I thought here would be a good place. It's not really related to linux or my boxes but what the heck, it's my blog and I can post what I want.
Here's the first part of the story:
Last week, I got an IM from a friend of mine. He needed a Web Developer. He thought about me as I had already told him that should he need a web programmer, I would be willing to give it a try. I know he knows his way around it too. Now, I was pretty miserable at my current day job. So naturally, I accepted to meet him to discuss it face to face. It wasn't like a job interview or anything, but still, we had to verify that we were on the same page. And we seemed to be. All was good. He had to talk with his associate to make sure it was OK for him to hire someone for a permanent job. He said he'd get back to me on Monday, we were Thursday(and his board meeting was Friday at 5PM).
Now, the second part of the story is where things get weird:
When I got home, that night, I told my parents that I was probably, let's say 90% sure I was getting the job. Of course, they can't be happy for me that I'll be doing a job I really want to do instead of being used as a data entry clerk. The first thing that they asked me was if I would be getting benefits(Dental Plans, Glasses coverage, etc). I really doubt it as the company is still pretty young but it's growing rapidly. Of course, they had to have a fit. Darn it, I'm freaking 30 years old and they still think I'm 5. What the heck is up with that.
Third and final part of the story:d
Now, yesterday(Monday), I got an IM from my friend telling me that everything was cool and that I was starting as soon as I was ready. I of course told him that I would need two weeks, in order for my boss to replace me. I didn't really feel like giving them two weeks but I figured, I'd rather leave on a good foot than on a bad one so, this morning I went to work, told my boss I was giving him my two weeks notice, because I had found something in my field, working with languages that I knew better, etc. I thought he'd get pissed but he took it really well. Which is odd, but he genuinely sounded happy for me. Which caught me by surprise. I'm still not over the shock of having done it, the way I did. Of course, I did a proper letter and I kept a copy of it in PDF format. Then of course, my mom calls me to get some news, I told her the story and again, the first thing she said is how are you going to get to work in the morning. Not being one who minds public transportation, I told her I had many ways I could get there and again, she tried to discourage me from taking the job. What the hell is up with them, I'll never figure it out.
The reason I blogged this is simple, I needed to vent. No need for comments, I don't really care what people have to say about it. I stand by my choice. Even if it tears down my familly, I'd rather be happy doing work that I like than being unhappy doing work that I hate because of the benefits (dental plan, glasses, etc).

03 Septembre 2006
Since it's been about 2 years that I last posted anything, here goes. I'll try to make this my official blog but I don't have much time to post. So basicly, for the last year and a half now, my server has been running FreeBSD which solved alot of my hard disk problems. When the hard disk fails, the controller resets itself and all is fine and everything is back to normal. This is done in a matter of miliseconds so yeah, it's as if it never failed.
I've also gotten into Ruby on Rails. I was already sold to Ruby and after I discovered Rails, I had to give it a whirl on my server. I like it. Although, MVC is still a bit confusing for me but I guess it'll come to me as I learn more. "Agile Web Development with Rails" is a pretty nifty book. I've been going through it. The online store example that we build up from scratch is pretty cool.
